My Top Picks:

Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Replenishing Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner

Davines Love Smoothing Shampoo and Conditioner (The PINK one)

Number 4 Clairifying Shampoo, Number 4 Lumiere d’hiver Reconstructing Masque

Nature Republic Argan Essential Deep Care Shampoo

Hair is the one thing I give up on the easiest. It’s thick, coarse, borderline oily, and there’s just so much of it. I’m not complaining, but I don’t have the patience for it. When I want to put in an effort I’ll bust out my curling iron, otherwise it’s up to the hair gods. Did I sleep on it weird? Yes? Ok- ponytail. Looks passable? Ok- leave it down. So what I realized helps a lot with dictating whether or not I’ll have a good hair day is my shampoo and conditioner.

A good shampoo in my books is one that leaves my hair soft, smooth, and bouncy. A good conditioner is one that leaves my hair silky and tangle free without weighing it down. I have used a wide range of shampoos and conditioners trying to find the perfect combination. For many years (at least 10), Head and Shoulders was my family’s main squeeze, but it has stopped working the way it used to. My mom, brother, and I all noticed that after washing with Head and Shoulders, our hair felt really stiff and hard. We’ve tried almost all the drugstore brands and started to venture into Asian/higher end brands.

Out of all the different shampoos and conditioners I have used, the ones I listed up top were the best. I just rescued my damaged hair with Alterna’s Caviar shampoo + conditioner, but at $38/bottle I wanted to explore more options. If you read my previous post about Davine’s NouNou Conditioner, you’ll know I loved the pink version of their Love line, but they discontinued it. You can probably find it off Amazon or Ebay, but Davines no longer produces it. I have yet to try the purple version, but so many people gave it bad reviews so I have been hesitant to try it. I mentioned the brand Number 4, which I first tried through Birchbox. My hair felt like the most luxurious silk after using it, but there’s quite a price tag that comes with it. :(

The newest one that I am currently testing out is a Korean brand (ha ha no surprise) called Nature Republic. Their Argan shampoo is so moisturizing! Since the weather has been more dry, I was washing my hair every other day and my scalp was really itchy because of the dryness. This shampoo was immediate relief! My hair has been on the dry side the past year since having it colored and this shampoo leaves my hair really soft without a need for conditioner. My only gripe is my roots get oily by midday because of how moisturizing the shampoo is. On the other hand, this allows me to wash my hair every day without drying out my strands or scalp.

So those are my standout shampoos and conditioners for thick, coarse hair! I hope this was helpful for those who are looking for something new to try. If you enjoyed this, please help me out by dropping a comment so I will know to continue making posts like these. Thanks, guys! <3
