Apple Turnover Recipe

My brother and I grew up eating fruit turnovers for breakfast whenever my parents decided to treat us. I guess I have a soft spot for them now. <3 I had a couple old apples in the back of the fridge that couldn’t be eaten fresh anymore so instead of throwing them out I turned them into turnovers. Yum yum! Here’s my super easy recipe: Ingredients

1 C flour

1 C butter

½ tsp salt

¼ C ice cold water

2 medium apples, thinly sliced

sugar and cinnamon to taste

1 tsp cornstarch

1 tsp lemon juice

1 egg whisked (for egg wash)

Preheat oven to 450 F.

In a mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Cut butter into the flour mixture until mixture resembles a crumble. Slowly add in water and combine until dough is formed. Let chill in fridge for 1 hour or if you’re in a time crunch put it in the freezer for 20 minutes.

In a pot combine apples, sugar, cinnamon, cornstarch, and lemon juice, and bring to boil on medium/high heat for 3-4 minutes. Lower to a simmer for an additional 5-10 minutes and cook until apples are soft. Be sure to stir consistently so the mixture does not burn.

When dough is ready, roll it out onto a lightly floured surface and cut into whatever shape you desire. (If you like your turnovers with thicker crusts then you can roll it out to about ¼ inch thickness otherwise, I’d go about 1/8 of an inch.) I made mine into squares and triangles. Apply a thin layer of egg wash on the surface of the dough before spooning in the apple filling. Fold over the dough and seal! You can use a fork to press down on the edges to make sure everything is sealed in tight. Cut a few slits or poke some holes on the top and use the remaining egg wash to brush it on the tops of all your turnovers. Place them on an     baking sheet and bake for about 20 minutes or until golden brown. Bon apetite! <3
