Tarte Shape Tape Hydrating Foundation Review
Tarte blew many of us away with their Shape Tape concealer so when word got out they were releasing not one, but two Shape Tape Foundation formulas, people went nuts (good and bad). Out of the two formulas, I picked the Hydrating Foundation to try since anything matte scares me now.
What It Is
Tarte’s Shape Tape Hydrating Foundation is a gel formula foundation with buildable full coverage (like the original Shape Tape Concealer) that contains collagen and hyaluronic acid to hydrate and smooth the skin. It claims to stay on the skin for 12 hours with no creasing, caking, or fading. This foundation is packaged in a glass bottle with a big doe foot applicator and you get 1.01 Fl. Oz. for $39. I purchased the shade Light Sand.

No harmful ingredients found. SD Alcohol 40 can be irritating, but I didn’t experience any problems. This foundation is formulated without parabens, mineral oil, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfates, or gluten.
Preface: I have large pores, some rolling and boxcar acne scars, red, combo+dry, and sensitive skin.
The biggest compliment I can give this foundation is just how natural looking it is. It’s extremely lightweight and comfortable to wear. If you don’t like the feeling of wearing foundation, but want the coverage then you’ll definitely love this. There’s no added fragrance so it just smells like foundation. I love the gel formula, which makes it quick and easy to blend so you don’t have to worry about streaks and patches. I used both brush and sponge to see if there would be difference in finish, but both produced beautiful results.
The finish is luminous and coverage is medium as you'll see in the photos below. If you have dark spots to cover up then you’ll still need concealer. I didn't use any so you can see the level of coverage you'll get with 1-2 thin layers. Because this formula is so light and natural, it does not fill pores or conceal texture. :( At least it does a good job covering redness with zero creasing or caking! If you have combination skin I definitely recommend setting with powder. I set my t-zone pretty well, but I was looking shiny around the 5-hour mark. Overall, the wear time is quite good and the foundation holds up well. At the end of the night, my blush and bronzer were still around!
One thing to note is the shades in this foundation do not match the Shape Tape Concealer so your best bet is to swatch in store for best results. This gel formula is a little more forgiving so you don’t need an exact shade match for it to work.
This is definitely a great foundation formula to try if you want the your skin but better look. It’s extremely, extremely comfortable and doesn’t feel like you’re wearing a mask. My only gripe is it doesn’t do anything to conceal my textured skin. Regardless, it’s an excellent option for those who want no fuss makeup.
*When I was researching the ingredient list, it was apparently the same as Tarte’s Empowered Hybrid Gel Foundation. Did they just repackage it and stick the Shape Tape name on it? Hmmm… sneaky sneaky?
