How To: Natural Way To Heal Pitted Acne Scars
Hello, hello! As you can tell from the title, I’m writing about my experience treating acne scars in a natural, laser-free way. I’ve wanted to have acne scar revision treatments for as long as I can remember, but after countless hours of research on different treatment options and several failed consultations, I was forced to look for an alternative. (I was advised not to pursue laser treatments because I was considered high risk for adverse reactions.) I needed a less invasive way to heal my scars or at least improve the look of them. I have been seeing an acupuncturist on a regular basis since October 2017. My appointments were originally aimed at just health maintenance, but once I knew lasers weren’t an option for me I turned to acupuncture treatments for my acne scars. Keep on reading for my experience, and before and after photos!
How Acupuncture Works
If you didn’t know, acupuncture involves using ultra fine needles placed at special points throughout the body depending on your ailment. These points are usually blocked pathways (i.e the cause of your problems) so the needles stimulate these points to unblock (aka get your chi flowing) for things to return to normal. Of course there is more to it than what I just described so you can do your own research, but that’s the main idea.
Does It Hurt?
98% of the time NO. You usually won’t feel a thing, but if you do it’s like a tiny pinch. I’ve been to several acupuncture doctors and the one I currently see is the best I’ve experienced. I’ll link his details below.
Did It Work?
The short answer is yes, but it needs some explaining. As with most skin treatments, acupuncture requires multiple visits before you start feeling and seeing a difference. Treating the skin also requires treating the body. For me, I have weak digestive health and I don’t get proper sleep. If you’re familiar with Chinese medicine then you’ll know everything in our body is connected. Bad sleep leads to digestive issues, which then leads to bad skin. It’s a vicious cycle!
With some minor lifestyle changes such as sleeping earlier and clean eating, and my acupuncture treatments, my skin did change. I have more blood flow and better circulation throughout my body, which stimulates cell growth. (yessss, get that tissue to grow back!) My pitted scars haven’t completely vanished, but they are less visible. The edges of the scars have softened and my skin has plumped up thanks the increased blood flow. Combined with my skin care routine, I think acupuncture played an important role in improving the look of my acne scars.
This doesn’t deliver immediate results compared to laser treatments, but it is a safe, natural way to heal your body from the inside out.
I tried getting some photos of my treatment, but asking my mom to take photos was probably not the best idea. She really knows how to capture me looking my worst, but at least you get to see what the treatment looks like. You'll see in the last photos of my face that my skin is visibly smoother than before.
Now for the most important: the before and after photos! I just converted these photos to black and white and no other editing was done so you can see how my skin changed in 5 months.
If you want to give acupuncture a try, I think it’s a great way to take care of your health and the improved physical appearance is a nice bonus. We all only get this once chance at life, so why not make it the best?
